The CBS has announced that it will end the ‘late show with Stephen Colbert’ in May 2026, marking the exit of the network from late night television. CBS says that this decision is based on financial concerns, despite the show, one of the highest rated programs in late night slots. The cancellation has attracted significant attention, especially it follows the recent legal disposal between CBS’s original company, Paramount and President Donald Trump. The agreement, combined with the upcoming merger of the Paramount with Skydance Media, has raised questions about Colbert’s future, especially in view of Trump’s vocal criticism. In his return to the show earlier this week, Colbert condemned the disposal of paramount with Trump, comparing it to “Big Fat Bribe”.However, CBS has issued a statement that emphasizes the show that the cancellation of the show is purely due to financial challenges and does not belong to the contents, performance or politics of the show.Paramount, who owns CBS, had a 3.5% share of its workforce last month. A source close to the network confirmed that the falling advertising revenue made the late shows unprofitable, as reported by CNN.Colbert shared the news with his audience during a tape on Thursday evening. “Our last season will be next year,” he said. “The network will end our show in May. This is the end of the late show on CBS.”The audience was surprised to hear the announcement, while some observers immediately expressed concern about the inspiration of paramount.American Senator Adam Shif, who was a guest on Thursday’s show, wrote in a post on X, “If Paramount and CBS finished the late show for political reasons, the public knows. And deserves better. ,Expressing gratitude to the CBS and the show’s audience, Colbert said, “I am very grateful to the Tiffany Network that I be given this chair and this beautiful theater to call home.”“The Late Show” has been a popular franchise of CBS for more than three decades. Originally hosted by David letterman, who launched the show in the 1990s, it was known for its “top ten” lists and bizarre segments. Colbert took over in 2015 and brought a sharp -edged political humor to the show, especially after Trump’s 2016 election.Trump’s faster critics of Trump helped the show to top the late night ratings, giving CBS its strongest performance in the slot in two decades. He remains a vocal critic during Trump’s second term, even the CBS faced legal pressure from the President. The CBS had earlier abolished the ‘The Late Show’ with James Cordon in 2023 due to financial concerns. Colbert helped produce very rarely expensive replacement shows, “After Midnight”, which also concluded earlier this year. The CBS said the show ended as its hosts, Taylor Tomalinson, did not want to host another season.
