Latest shock: Afghanistan hit two more earthquakes; Fifth in a week

According to the National Center for Sisamology (NCS), Afghanistan was shaken by two more earthquakes in early Saturday, marking the fifth such seismic phenomenon in the last week, with a magnitude of about 4.0 on the Richter scale. The first shiver was recorded at IST at 1.26 pm, measured 4.2 on the Richter scale with a depth of 190 km. The second earthquake hit the IST at 2:11 am after just 45 minutes, recorded a magnitude of 4.0 and a depth of 125 km. Both events were located in the northern region of Afghanistan based on NCS data.On Friday night, another earthquake measuring 4.6 also shook the region. Earlier in the week, two more quake reports of Magnitude 4.7 and 4.3 were reported, leading to the fifth seismic blow since July 17.The vulnerability of Afghanistan’s repeated and often disastrous earthquakes stems from its place in the convergence of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Hindu Kush mountain range, in particular, experiences frequent shocks and afterchox. The United Nations Office notes for the coordination of human affairs (UNOCHA) that Afghanistan is highly threatened by natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides and seasonal floods. These events carried forward further tension and are struggling with decades struggles and limited infrastructure, making disaster response and recovery particularly challenging.
