Yamunanagar: Tension erupted in the Durga Garden area of Jagadhri late last night as local residents staged a protest demanding the closure of a liquor vend, claiming that they are increasing anti -social activities and threatens the safety of women and children in the neighborhood.Dozens of residents, including women, gathered outside the liquor vend and staged a dharna, alleging that the shop’s presence caused continuous public disturbances. The protesters said that drunk people often created an uproar near their homes, causing fear and inconvenience, especially between women and girls.“My house is located right next to the wine vend. Every evening, people drink and shout on the streets. This is insecure for our daughters and stressful for our families. A local woman concerned said that this vend should be closed immediately.On receiving information about the protest, a police team at Huda police station led by SHO Inspector Suresh Kumar reached the spot. The authorities managed to calm the protesters and formally urged them to complain with the Deputy Commissioner. SHO Kumar assured the residents that if the Deputy Commissioner orders the transfer of the shop, it will be processed.Meanwhile, Excise and Taxation Inspector Anil Saini said that the vend of alcohol in the question is legal and has been working in the existing location for many years. He said that the protest may have been provoked by individuals involved in illegal liquor trade, whose operations have allegedly affected by legal vengeance.Inspector Saini said, “There are vested interests trying to mislead the public. Some people involved in the sale of illegal liquor want this licensed shop to be closed for their profit.”The police assured the protesting residents that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and necessary action would be taken to ensure peace and security in the area. The strike was removed after this assurance.
