Kolkata: Five policemen, including DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai, were injured and two government vehicles were damaged and one bike was set when the police on Wednesday tried to stop clashes in Rabindranagar-Akara near Maheshtla. The police resorted to Lethi Chairgi and removed tear gas to curb the situation. Till the previous report came, the police continued the raid and scored four persons. But the crowd moved towards Santoshpur level and went to Nadial Police Station area under Kolkata Police. Another struggle took place around 4.30 pm with a crowd attacking KP police including DC (Port) RAI.

Police formed small teams in the riot gear, each under the leadership of a senior officer. Police teams reportedly chased the protesters, some Lathich advocated some more tear gas shells. The situation was brought to normal condition till about 6 o’clock. Armed Battalion and RAF conducted a route march between Santoshpur Rail Bridge and Rabindranagar PS within a radius of 3 km. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and ADG (South Bengal) Suprasim government camped on the spot during this operation. Later, Verma met DCP Pie at a nursing home in Kolkata. Late night, a senior official said, “The situation is now peaceful. The raids are on. Four persons have been arrested so far. The condition of the injured police is stable.” The police did not make any statement. Trinumool spokesman Kunal Ghosh condemned the incident, saying that despite the attack, the police “firmly but sensitively” handled the situation. Criticizing the comments of Ghosh, the opposition leader of Bengal, Suvandu Adhikari, said, “Unpleasant incidents happen. It takes place everywhere. But what should be our role, to incite it or work responsibly?” The official protesting outside Bhavani Bhavan demanded the deployment of CAPF. He said, “CAPF Parineeration Order (in Murshidabad) of the Calcutta High Court can also be implemented here,” he said, showing that he can go to court.
