New Delhi: Protests continued in Manipur on Sunday after the arrest of leaders from Meitei organization Arambai Tengol. The protesters defined prohibitive orders and confronts with security forces, motivating the administration to install curb in five districts of the Imphal Valley and suspend internet services. In response to unrest, the state governor held a high-level security review meeting with top officials and MLAs. Meanwhile, in the relevant news, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday announced the arrest of three rebels associated with a deadly attack on security forces in Morah, located in Tangnupal district of Manipur on January 17, 2024. Did the unrest trigger?
The protesters blocked the roads by burning tires and furniture at various places including Uripok and Koireng and Khurai in the Imphal East in the Imphal West District. In Koirgi, the agitators dug the roads and put mud piles to disrupt the security forces.Similar protest was reported in Ziribam district, which is the border of Assam.Prohibitive orders have been made in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thubal, Bishanupur and Kaking districts. Internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN Access, were suspended in these areas from Saturday night.The unrest began after the arrest of the leaders from the Arabian Teengol. A BJP MLA, K, Ibomcha said that five people were arrested, one of them by CBI. The CBI said that the individual, allegedly involved in various criminal activities during the 2023 violence, was arrested at the Imphal Airport and was taken to Guwahati for court proceedings.Ibomcha, who represents the Lamlai constituency and was part of the delegation from the Governor, said, “During the meeting, we were informed that five people were arrested, and among them, one Kanan Singh was arrested by the CBI in connection with a case. We recently appreciate the roles taken by the Arabian Teengol during the floods. ,A police officer said, “Violent protests started after the arrest of Arambai Teengol leaders. Three people have been injured in a conflict between agitators and personnel. All preventive measures are in place.”In Imphal East and Bishanupur, people were ordered to stay indoors from 10 pm on Saturday, until the next notice under Section 163 (1) of the Indian city security Sanhita (BNSS). Similar measures were implemented in Thubal and Kaking.The Internet Suspension Order by Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) An Ashok Kumar said, “In view of the prevailing law and order situation, especially in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thubbal, Kaking and Bishanupur districts, some anti-social elements can be clearly used social media for broadcasting images, which is in a state of person, which is innocent.“The suspension will last for five days from 11.45 am on Saturday.The statement said that legal action will be taken against anyone who violates these orders.
Mlas Meitei seek the release of leaders
In the light of the ongoing unrest, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla called a security review meeting with senior officials. Bhalla also met a delegation of 25 MLAs from both BJP and Congress.Raj Bhavan said, “Today, a group of MLA called Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur at Raj Bhavan, during which the MLA apprised the governor of the current law and order situation in the state and requested his intervention to help find a cordial solution.”During the meeting, the leaders requested the governor to secure the release of the Arambai Tenggol member, indicating that the arrest had triggered terror, especially internet services were suspended in five districts.“Our five boys who belong to Arambai Tenggol have been arrested, after which the entire state has gone into a terror mode. Some places are closed and blocked at some places, and the internet is closed. Protesters tortured tires and old furniture
On Saturday, the protesters blocked the roads in areas such as Quakethel and Uripok by setting fire to tires and left the furniture. The protesters clashed with security forces at several places in the state capital on the night of 7 June.Khurai Lamlong, in Imphal East, a mob set a bus on fire. Security personnel removed tear gas shells near Kangla Gate, which is to disperse the crowd at a distance of about 200 meters from Raj Bhavan. Security has increased around Raj Bhavan with additional deployment of central forces.In particular, more than 260 people have been killed and thousands of people have been displaced since May 2023, due to ethnic violence between Meitei and Kukii-ZO groups. It has been under the President’s rule since February 13 after the resignation of State Chief Minister N. Biran Singh.
