The Mayor of Nagasaki announced on Thursday that the city would invite “representatives of all countries” and regions to the peace monument to mark the 80th anniversary of the city atomic bombing. Invitation in 157 countries and regions with diplomatic missions in Japan will include Russia, Belarus and Israel, which was excluded last year. Mayor Shiro Suzuki said that he wants all representatives to use the brutal consequences of nuclear weapons as a lesson during increasing division and struggles. Three days after Hiroshima’s first bombing, the United States dropped its second atomic bomb on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, killing more than 210,000 people. Japan surrendered on 15 August, at the end of the World War II and the entire Asia of almost half a century of aggression. Suzuki said that his city is returning to his “fundamental purpose” of the ceremony – atomic bomb victims to mourn the victims and pray for permanent world peace. “We want to go beyond the national borders, to cross ideological differences and any other divisions that gather global representatives in Nagasaki.” He said: “At the time of the deteriorating division of international society, I feel more strongly more strongly about the importance of representatives of all countries to attend the Nagasaki Peace Memorial and use the tyrannical and inhuman consequences of nuclear weapons through my eyes, ears and hearts.” Suzuki did not invite Israel to the 2024 anniversary, citing the concern of “unexpected situations”, such as violent protests on war in Gaza disrupt the monument. But the exclusion of Israel attracted criticisms and boycott by the US ambassadors and five other groups in seven countries – Canada, France, Germany, Italy and UK – and European Union Ambassadors. Russia and its colleague Belarus have not been invited to the Nagasaki Memorial event after the Moscow invasion of Ukraine since 2022. Japan has faced nuclear attacks despite being the only country in the world, depending on the American nuclear umbrella amid growing stress in the region and is “extended preventive” and supports the occupation of nuclear weapons for the preventive.
