Navark Mayor Ras Baraka was released on Friday night after being arrested during a protest at a federal immigration detention center in Newark. Baraka was taken into custody by federal agents outside the Delani Hall, where he joined the protesters opposing the new opening facility. He was released at around 8 pm (local time) after several hours in custody.“The reality is: I did nothing wrong,” Baraka told supporters that he stepped out of an SUV and stepped with emergency lights. However, he said that he could not discuss the matter on the advice of his lawyers and judges, he offered strong words of unity and support for the immigrant community and said, “At some point we have to stop these people from becoming the cause of partition between us.”Baraka, a Democrat, who is running to make New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy successful, has been a vocal critic of the Detention Center operated by the private jail company Jio Group. According to the news agency Associated Press, Baraka has argued that the facility of 1,000-bed should not have been allowed to open the facility citing the lack of appropriate permits.According to the video footage reviewed by AP, Baraka returned to the public side of the facility gates when federal agents surrounded him and detained him. “I am not on their property. They cannot come out on the road and arrest me,” Baraka said the moments before pulling back through the gate in handcuffs. After his arrest, Baraka and three Democratic members of Congress, reps.Watson Coleman said in a post on social media that “we did not give the detention center a ‘storm’,” a motherland, while fighting a safety statement that MPs and protesters accused them of illegally entering the convenience. “We were using our inspection authority,” he said. According to the New York Times, Baraka was not allowed inside with MPs and was later arrested despite standing outside the convenience.Baraka’s wife, Linda accused the federal agents, “He wanted to create an example from the mayor,” he said, seeing that he was not allowed to see during his detention. “New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Placin, whose office is defending a state law banning private immigration detention centers, arrests called “deepening related”, no state or local police. Governor Murphy also criticized the incident, called Barak’s arrest “unjust” and “described him as an exemplary public servant, who has always stood for our weakest neighbors.”After his release, Baraka said, “Now what is happening in this country, everyone should be afraid. They are using courts. They are using everything else to justify what they are doing.”
