Bhubaneswar: A day after Baikunth Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of the Rural Development Department of Odisha, was caught bouncing cash bundles on the roof of his neighbor during a vigilance raid in his Bhubaneswar house, the officials arrested him on Saturday for retirement for 15 crores.Vigilance officials produced Sarangi before a nominated court, which rejected his bail argument and sent him to judicial custody. Officials said Sarani’s arrest was the 61st case against an Class I officer in the state this year, which was going on in the anti -corruption drive. “Srangi was found in possession of assets that were 483% more than known sources of income,” said an official. He was booked under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.During the discoveries, two double-storey residential buildings were found in alert sleeves, which were a flat in Bhubaneswar and Puri, and seven high-value plots on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar and Angul belonging to Sarangi. A cash amount of Rs 2.5 crore was also found. Sarangi had invested Rs 2.7 crore in the stock market and Rs 1.5 crore in insurance and banks.In another development, on Saturday, Sleuths discovered the places related to Assistant Executive Engineer (Rhodes and Buildings Division -1), which allegedly belonged to Dilip Kumar Chaudhary and Bhubaneswar in Berhampur and Bhubaneswar for uneven assets.
