Pope Leo XIV AI as the head of the Catholic Church calls a challan for humanity in the first major address

In its first major address since becoming the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV described Artificial Intelligence (AI) as one of the most pressure issues in front of humanity. During his first formal audience with cardinals, he stressed the responsibility of the church to respond to modern challenges while being vested in his teachings. Speaking to the Vatican on Saturday, the new Pope said that AI raises new challenges to protect human dignity, justice and labor. He attracted a historic parallel between today’s digital revolution and the 19th century industrial revolution. Referring to the Pope Leo XIII – his name – Pope Leo XIV explained the name of his choice. Leo XIII led the church from 1878 to 1903 and was remembered to shape modern Catholic social ideas. His 1891 encyclopedia Raram Novaram addressed the rights of the workers and offered a middle ground between irregular capitalism and socialist policies. “In our own day, the church provides the treasure of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and for development in the field of artificial intelligence that faces new challenges to protect human dignity, justice and labor,” said Leo. The new Pope’s concern about AI reflects a position organized by Pope Francis, his predecessor. In the final year of his sinner, Francis warned of the inhuman effects of AI and pushed to an international treaty to regulate its use. He told the world leaders that humans – not machines – always maintain control over decisions related to force or social results. Francis also used his 2024 peace message to take precautions against AI’s uncontrolled development, saying that such technology should go into compassion, kindness, morality and forgiveness.
