Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV held the first meeting with a senior Russian conservative cleric in the Vatican on Saturday, as Holi C said further without giving further details after becoming the head of the Catholic Church earlier this year. Leo – who has called Kremlin to make a “gesture” towards peace in Ukraine – obtained the metropolitan Anthony of Volocolmsk, the chief of external relations in the Russian Orthodox Church. The relationship between Vatican and Moscow has been frosting for centuries. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patrik Kiril, has consecrated the Ukraine invasion of Moscow, which he has described as a “holy war”. But Moscow held a dialogue with the late Pope Francis, which was widely criticized in Ukraine, Metropolitan Anthony had a dozen meetings with Argentina’s Pontiff. The Russian Maulvi told the Italian newspaper La Republika before the meeting that Francis had a “balanced approach” on Ukraine, while he had not yet known Leo’s stance. Leo is the first American Pope. He captured the church at a time when the United States is insisting on peace in Ukraine, in efforts that have achieved some results to stop the three -year war so far. Leo received Ukrainian leader Volodimir Zelansky earlier this month and also spoke to Vladimir Putin of Russia over the phone. The Vatican was swimming as a possible platform for peace talks earlier this year, but the idea was rejected by Kremlin and negotiations in Istanbul. Anthony reiterated that, for Moscow, the Vatican would not be a “neutral” ground for any peace talks. Metropolitan Anthony was appointed as head of the external ties of Moscow Church in 2022 – the year Russia attacked Ukraine – and was the first Church messenger in Italy.
