Powerful Earthquake Hit Russian Coast: Japan Warns of Tsunami Waves up to 1 meter in Pacific – what we know so far

A powerful earthquake of Magnitude 8 hit Russia’s Doodle Peninsula on Wednesday, after which a tsunami alert was issued in Pacific.The US Geological Survey reported an earthquake at a depth of 19.3 km, but there was no immediate update on its impact in Russia’s Dastics region. Tokyo University Earthquaker Shinichi Sakai told NHK that distant earthquakes can also trigger tsunami in Japan if the epicenter is shallow
Here we still know:
- The Meteorological Agency of Japan issued an advice for a tsunami up to 1 meter (yard) along the Pacific coast of Japan.
- The earthquake was about 250 km (160 mi) from Hokkaido.
- It was only a little felt, the AP described Japan’s NHK television.
- There is no harm so far.
