‘Privileged to do this’: Donald Trump delays 50% tariff on European Union goods to make a place for talks

US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a delay in implementing the proposed 50 percent tariff on goods from the European Union, giving more time to give business talks with a bid to push the deadline from 1 June to 9 July.The decision interacted with the European Commission Chairman Ursula von Der Leyen on the phone on the first day. According to Trump, von Der Leyen expressed a strong desire to engage in “serious talks”, motivating him to expand.Before departing for Washington, Trump told anyone that he would have to listen, he would have to do so. “He said that von Der Leyen said,” promised to be fast together and see if we can do some work. “Trump increased stress last week after Trump threatened to stand in a social media post on Friday, criticizing the European Union “very difficult to deal with” and claiming that the business talks “were not going anywhere.” The tariffs were originally to be implemented on 1 June.But Sunday’s call appeared to reduce enmity, at least for now. Trump immediately after his media appearance, Trump said, “I agreed to expand on July 9, 2025. It was my good fortune to do so.”Welcoming the move, Von Der Leyen said that the European Union was committed to reaching a meaningful agreement. “Europe is ready to interact fast and decisively,” he said in a statement. “To reach a good deal, we will need time by 9 July.”
