Srinagar: The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress chief Mallikrajun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, demanding the restoration of the state to Jammu and Kashmir by bringing a bill in the monsoon session of Parliament.He urged the Center to protect his rights, land and identity, to address the cultural, developmental and political aspirations of the people of Ladakh “to provide constitutional safety measures under the sixth program in the center of Ladakh”.Jammu and Kashmir CM Umar Abdullah welcomed Vikas. “We were waiting for the day when the opposition would raise our voice in Parliament,” he said.Abdullah said that the restoration of the state is not an unusual demand, reminding that the Center has repeatedly promised, inside and outside, in the Supreme Court, and on public platforms, to restore the state of J&K to “appropriate time”.However, PDP Executive and Former Minister Naeem Akhtar said that there is not much reason for optimism, given a sharp division between the opposition on the Center and on every issue. But he said, “The return of the state will provide some relief.”Farooq Abdullah, the head of the National Conference, said that he would react only after the government introduced such a bill in Parliament.Ladakh MP Haji Hanifa Jaan also welcomed the Congress’ move. He told TOI that jobs in Ladakh are a big concern. “But even more than that we want the restoration of democracy, and protect security measures for our culture and identity. We want them to be preserved,” he said.
