In November 2025, a major academic platform focused on the history, culture and architecture of Haj and two sacred mosques will be in Saudi Arabia, which uses both traditional research and modern technologies to protect and document the Islamic heritage and highlight the state’s commitment to preserve and document the Islamic heritage.
Scholars’ gathering to find out heritage, culture and innovation
King Abdulziz Foundation for Research and Archives (Darha) is ready to host a comprehensive academic platform “Haj and two sacred mosques: history, culture, architecture – permanent knowledge and digital documentation” In November 2025, Zumada al-Adwal to conform to 1447 h. According to a report by the Saudi Gazette, the event is being organized in partnership with the Haj and Umrah Ministry and the God Service Program guests, which are two major institutions in the state’s ongoing initiative to study and preserve the historical and spiritual importance of Islamic pilgrimage and holy sites in Makka and Madinah. The initiative of this scholars is to deepen academic engagement and create a new view on the history of Haj and two holy mosques. Scholars and experts of many subjects, including history, architecture, Islamic art, literature, geography, media and digital studies, are expected to contribute to discussion and research efforts.
Focus areas and thematic scope
The platform will concentrate around five main subjects, each showing a major dimension of permanent heritage of Haj and two sacred mosques:
- Saudi Arabia’s role in serving two holy mosques
- Haj and holy site in historical texts and travel literature
- Architecture and Visual Identification of two Holy Mosques
- Cultural memory and social heritage of Haj
- Use of modern technologies in documentation of Haj
One of the major objectives of the platform is to check how digital equipment and emerging technologies can be used to enhance conservation efforts, providing emergent educational experiences, and supporting the support of global scholars on the subject.
Paper presentations and review process
Researchers interested in contributing have been invited to present academic letters for the platform. The submission window will be open till the end of Rabi al-Way 1447h (22 September 2025). The process includes:
- One month colleague review period
- One month amendment window for authors
- The final selection of the sanctioned papers will be announced two weeks after the conclusion of the amendment phase
This timeline allows for perfectly academic investigation to ensure that the selected research refers to both the depth and practical relevance of scholars for the goals of the event.
Parallel event: Haj Conference and Exhibition
Even in a separate initiative for November, the 5th edition of the Haj Sammelan and exhibition will be held at Jeddah Superdome from 9-12 November 2025 (18–21 Jumda al-Avwal 1447h). The annual program focused on increasing the operations and service aspects of Haj, the annual program organized under the patronage of the two sacred mosques, Salman bin Abdulziz Al Saud. Along with participants from more than 95 countries, it brings together policy makers, industry leaders and nephews to exchange knowledge and detect solutions to improve pilgrim experiences. This version of the exhibition will include extended partnership, a large pioneer base, and rich material that supports stability and innovation in pilgrimage services, offering a supplement from the academic platform organized by Darh.
