The 2016 recruitment campaign organized by the West Bengal School Services Commission (SSC) stems row, which was killed by the Calcutta High Court for widespread irregularities. The Supreme Court recently upheld the decision, resulting in over 25,000 appointments.
In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met several affected teachers and strongly criticized the move, calling it a “conspiracy” to destroy the education system of West Bengal.
“A conspiracy is going on to destroy the education system. Teachers of classes are the entrances of 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th higher education … Many (teachers) are gold medalists, they have achieved great results in their lives, and you are calling them thieves. You are calling them disorganized, which is giving you this?” West Bengal CM said.
He also expressed his unwavering support for the dismissed teachers, saying, “The decision that has come cannot be taken in a positive way. I can be put in jail for what I am saying, but I do not care about this. The Supreme Court has not yet given a list of those who are eligible and lost their jobs.”
CM Mamta assured the teachers affected by her continuous support, announcing that she would fight for her for “until he is alive”, even if it means to face prison time. While some teachers welcomed his assurance, others raised the voice of disappointment on the lack of a clear roadmap for restoration.
