New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, and his wife Arpita had a narrow migration while enjoying a water game in Puri Sagar, police said on Monday. The incident occurred near the Lighthouse area on Saturday evening, where the couple was on a speedboat ride.The video footage broadcast by local television channels hit the boat with a huge wave, lost balance, and captivated in rough water.Arpita said in a video message available with PTI, “We survived by the grace of God. I am still in trauma. It should not happen, and the water game in the sea should be regulated properly. I will write to Puri SP and Odisha Chief Minister after returning to Kolkata.”Recalling the terrible experience, he said that the boat had collided with a wave “about ten-storey high”, causing the vessel to be overturned, throwing all the passengers-which included him and the Sneesh in the Samudra.

“Thankfully, the quick action of the lifeguard saved our lives,” he said.Local police said that the lifeguards posted on the beach reached the spot and rescued all the tourists on the board. Rubber tableaux were used to ensure the safety of passengers.Arpita, a blind, blamed the incident on the “greed” of the adventure sports operators. He alleged that the boat was unstable, taking only four passengers on a ship designed for ten, making it unbalanced and disqualified to handle strong tides.“Due to low weight, the boat loses balance and could not withstand the huge wave. The sea was already very thick,” he said.

“Although we expressed concern about safety due to some sea and high tide, operators assured us that it was safe. But shortly after exiting, a huge wave hit the boat, and it was capitalized, “he further said.Arpita demanded that the government tightened the rules around the water game in the region and said that the authorities should also consider banning such activities.Local people alleged that the speedboat was operated by untrained employees employed by a private adventure company.“The crew lacks proper skills to handle high tide and the company ignored the compulsory security protocol for such activities,” said an eyewitness.It was also alleged that the company was conducting water sports activities without obtaining the required permission from the Puri district administration.
