Sudden warnings on US visit to Italy, cite ‘risk of terrorist violence’

Italy kept itself as the fifth most viewed country in the world in 2024, welcoming 65 million international visitors in 2024. However, the US and Canada still keep the country on their “exercise” travel advisory ratings instead of “general precautions”.,The US State Department issued a new travel advisor on 23 May, warning of potential attacks in major public sectors, including hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, transport hubs, shopping centers, parks and cultural programs. “There is a threat of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Italy,” said the road.Warning deployed Italy along with other Western European countries such as France and the UK, where major cities face equal security risks. Rome, the house of about three million people, is considered more susceptible to such hazards than small European capitals such as Vienna, Burn or Zagreb, which are currently rated at level 1, “exercise general precautions”.The advisor warned that terrorists could not give very little or any warning, urging passengers to be vigilant on various types of general goals. These include popular tourist places, transport centers, shopping malls and markets, as well as local government buildings. Hotels, clubs, restaurants, religious places, parks and sports or cultural programs are also considered possible risk. Additionally, schools, airports and other public sectors have been exposed as places where attacks can occur, underlining the need for increasing precautions throughout the country. The US advisory system consists of four levels, with levels 1 lowest and level 4 reserved under powerful rule for war territories or countries. While the designation of level 2 for Italy has not changed in recent years, the newly reinstated consultant includes a more specific cautious tone, although no new events have been cited. The State Department said that its advice is regularly reviewed and updated, however, it does not make it clear why this special update was now released. Despite its reputation as one of the world’s safest countries, a similar vague advice for Switzerland released on 20 May ridiculed on social media. The Italian government has not commented on a fresh American advisor, which encourages passengers to be vigilant, follow local news and register with the US Embassy before or during their journey. “Check local media for breaking news,” notice advised the notice. It asked tourists to prepare a casual plan for emergency situations. In a comprehensive diplomatic context, advisory updated other nations investigated the journey to the United States. The UK Foreign Ministry updated its own guidance in March 2025, warning citizens to strictly comply with the US entry rules amid reports of passengers detained on US borders. “You can be responsible for arrest or detention when you break the rules,” advice note.Meanwhile, in a modest gesture towards improving relations, the US dropped China’s travel warning from Level 3 (“Rethinking Travel”) to level 2 in late 2024, a step that attracted backlash from Republican MPs, but did not reversed under Trump Administration. As soon as the peak travel season begins, tourists visiting Italy in 2025 are advised to be aware.
