The Center wants immediate hearing in SC before ruling the arguments against the Waqf Act

New Delhi: The Center presented a warning in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, requesting to listen before any decision on petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. A warning filing ensures that the courts cannot pass the order without the party’s hearing.
Several petitions, in more than 10 numbers, have been filed in the Supreme Court competing with the newly enacted law. The petitioners include AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owasi and Congress MP Mohammad Jowud, All India Muslim personal law board And Jamit Ulama-I-Hind.
Citing PTI sources, these petitions are expected to be heard before the court bench on 15 April, although this information is not yet visible on the official website of the Supreme Court.
On 7 April, a bench of Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna assured senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who represents Zameet Ulama-e-Hind, that they would consider schedules for hearing.
The WAQF (Amendment) Bill, 2025, received the presidential approval from Droupadi Murmu on 5 April, after its passage through Parliament with intensive discussion in both houses.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill with 95 votes in favor of 128 votes on Friday morning and about 17 hours of debate. The Lok Sabha had approved the first law in the week after a 13 -hour long discussion.
The Act tries to promote transparency and overwall the management of Waqf properties by ensuring representation from various Muslim sects within Waqf boards. It also includes measures to protect heritage sites, strengthen social welfare initiatives and promote economic inclusion for marginalized communities including Muslim widows.
