New Delhi: Intelligence Bureau (IB) director Tapan Kumar Deka was given a second year extension on Tuesday, which would make him the longest serving chief of the domestic intelligence agency as the term of the IB chief was fixed in two years in 2005.Deka’s fourth year in IB’s rudder comes in view of the success of Operation Sindoor, which has been done by armed forces in vengeance to kill 26 citizens in a terrorist attack in J&K Pahgam. Nine deep terrorist bases inside POK and Pakistan were killed under operation and it eventually attacked Pakistan’s major military property, including an air defense system in Lahore and Noor Khan Airbase in Rawalpindi.Deka, 62, is the 1988-batch IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre. A terrorism expert, he was appointed as the IB Director in June 2022, and in June 2024, a one -year expansion was given on completing his two -year term. On Tuesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the expansion of one year from June 30, 2025, or by further orders, whichever is earlier.The expansion was provided in exempting exemption in the provisions of the Fundamental Rules 56 (D)-which barrier to the service beyond 60 years-and according to Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death Cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, according to Rule 16 (1A) of the Rules, 1958, which is “in public interest” to expand the service of high-ranking officers specified to the center power.Earlier, their predecessors Rajiv Jain and Arvind Kumar were given six months and one year extension respectively, beyond their fixed conditions.Known as an ‘Operation Man’ in the intelligence fraternity, Deka is considered an expert in ‘operations’ in the north -east region of the country along with J&K.Deka was in charge of Counter-Hamle during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. With a rich experience in dealing with terrorism and Islamic fanaticism, Deka has led to operations against the Indian Mujahideen-the terrorist group behind several serial blasts in India-led to the neutralization of its top cadre in India, who was leaving the outfit behind.Deka was also deputed in his home state Assam to handle the unstable situation arising after mass violence after the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in 2019.
