‘The US President performed a miracle’: signing the peace treaty at Armenia and Azerbaijan White House Summit; Announce the ‘Trump Route’ Transit Corridor

US President Donald Trump on Friday announced a historic peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House. Leaders of the two countries signed an agreement with the aim of ending the decades of conflict.South Caucasus countries agreed to reopen major transport routes, while the US gained impact as Russia’s power in the region. The deal includes creating a major transit corridor, named Trump Root for International Peace and Prosperity, the White House announced.Trump then called the Naming of the route “a great honor for me”, but said, “I did not ask for it.”Azerbaijania President Illhum Aliyev said the corridor “will create connectivity opportunities for so many countries,” saying, “We are starting a way towards strategic partnership.” Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pashinian described the agreement as a “important milestone”, as quoted by AP, “We are laying a foundation to write a better story than we in the past.”The two leaders credited Trump and his team for success, Aliyev said, “President Trump performed a miracle in six months.” Trump reflected over the long struggle, “Thirty five years he fought and now he is a friend and he is going to be friends for a long time.”The transit route would connect Azerbaijan to its nails exclusive, which was separated from a narrow strip of the Armenian region – a major glued point in previous dialogues. Trump expressed interest in going on the route, saying, “We are going to reach there.”White House spokesman Anna Kelly said the agreement would “build a cooperative future that would benefit the two countries, their territory of the South Caucasus and beyond.” He insisted that the corridor would “allow the sovereignty of Armenia and the regional integrity and its people, allowing unrelated connectivity between the two countries.”The deal represents a geopolitical change that challenges Russia’s traditional influence. Moscow, who played the mediator for decades, has seen a decline in his domination, especially after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The Trump administration began a serious conversation with Armenia and Azerbaijan earlier this year, in which Trump’s envoy Steve Witchoff discussed the “regional reset” with Aliyev in Baku. Negotiations on developing the Trump route- including rail, oil, gas and fiber optic lines- are expected to start soon, at least nine developers expressed interest, AP said.In addition to the United Armenia-Azerbaijan Agreement, the two countries signed separate deals with the US to promote energy, technology and cooperation in the economy.Trump, Pashinian and Aliyev signed the peace announcement in the state dining room. This is the first such agreement between the two countries since the Cold War ended. Documents included a letter to which the organization was asked to dissolve its Minsk group for safety and cooperation in Europe, which has mediated conflict since the 1990s, but is now considered irrelevant by the White House.Armenia -ezerbaijan regional rivalryThe Karbakh region has been a struggle area between Armenia and Azerbaijan for nearly 40 years. During the Soviet rule, it was an autonomous, mostly Armenian region within Azerbaijan. The growing tension between Christian Armenian and Muslim Azerbaijanis, surrounded by historical complaints, increased due to the weakening of the USSR. In 1988, Karbakh demanded to join Armenia, causing clashes. After acquiring independence in 1991, a full -scale war broke out, leading to about 30,000 deaths and displaced a million people. A 1994 ceasefire left the Armenian forces controlling Karbakh and nearby areas. International mediation efforts failed. In 2020, Azerbaijan, a Turkish supported by Turkey, launched a six -week war to regain the region, resulting in over 6,700 casualties and controlled parts of Karbakh. Following a Russian-Brokede peace agreement, the peace soldiers deployed. In September 2023, Azerbaijan fully retrosed Karbakh through Swift military action, inspired over 100,000 ethnic Armenians to escape in Armenia within a week.
