New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday responded to the Trump administration’s decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on India for import of crude oil from Russia. With this, the total tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods is now 50%.The new announcement took place a week later when Trump had already declared 25% tariff on Indian exports. Tharoor said that this development is not “good news” for India, warning that such high tariffs would make Indian products very expensive in the US market. “It is going to make Indian goods ineffective for many people in America,” he said.He compared India’s situation with other countries and raised concerns about competition. “I am afraid that if you tariff less to us like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, even Bangladesh and Pakistan, people will not buy goods from America in the US after all, if they can buy them cheaper elsewhere. So it is not very good for America for our exports.” Tharoor said that India now needs to focus on the expansion of trade. “This means that we need to diversify very seriously in other countries and other markets, which we can be interested in offering. Now we have an FTA with the UK. We are talking to the European Union. There are many countries in which we will be able to do, but in the short term, it is definitely a shock”The Ministry of External Affairs also criticized the US decision in a strong word statement, called it “unfortunate” and confirmed India’s intention to protect its national interests. The statement said, “It is very unfortunate that America should choose to put additional tariffs on India for those tasks that many other countries are also taking in their national interest.”President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order, which announced an additional 25% tariff, which would be applicable above and above the current 25%. While the first tariff is applied on August 7, 2025, the second will be applied after 21 days from now.
