Trump administration sued Northern Carolina Election Board on Voter ID number

The Trump administration has filed a case against the Election Board of Northern Carolina for violating a federal law regarding voter registration. According to the allegations, during board registration, some voters have failed to collect mandatory ID numbers.The US Justice Department says that the assistance of the state 2002 has failed to follow the US Vote Act, which requires the voters to provide either the driver’s license number or the final four marks of their social security number during registration. If a person does not have either, the state will have to assign a unique ID number to them.At the end of 2023, when the Democrats controlled the State Election Board, he admitted that there was some issue about the missing ID number after a voter’s complaint. Even though he updated the registration form, he did not reach the previous registered voters to collect the missing information before the Northern Carolina general elections in 2024.The counsel for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice wants a judge to give 30 days time to the state to contact voters with records that do not comply with federal law and update their records. The department says that voter rolls should be accurate to ensure fair and legal elections.This is not the first time the issue has come up. Republican had filed similar cases earlier, stating that around 225,000 voter registration ID numbers could disappear.The leadership of the Election Board of Northern Carolina changed this month after a new law gave more control to Republican. The board now has a Republican majority, and its new executive director Sam Hayes says they are reviewing the trial and committed to follow the federal law.Local elections in Northern Carolina are scheduled for September.
