Typhoon Danas hit Taiwan: 2 killed, hundreds injured; International flights canceled

According to the Central Weather Administration, Typhoon Danas slammed on the west coast of Taiwan late on Sunday, killing two people and injured around 500.In the beginning of Monday, around 400,000 houses were still without electricity. The storm created a rare and direct landfall in the Chiai County- for the first time on record that a typhoon killed the region. The agency described the passage of Danas as “very unusual”, as the island reached 222 km (138 mi) per hour in the south -west.Although Danas moved north and exiting the island in early Monday, it left behind torrential rain. Southern Taiwan received more than 500 mm of rain (20 inches) rainfall over the weekend, causing widespread floods.Among the deadly people, a 60 -year -old man died, when a power outage disabled his ventilator, while a 69 -year -old man was badly killed by a falling tree while driving. The AFP, quoting the National Fire Agency, was injured at least 491 people.Emergency employees evacuated about 3,500 residents, mainly from mountainous areas near Kosung, due to the possibility of landslides and flash floods.Air travel was also disrupted, in which 33 international flights were canceled on Monday as the impact of the storm wandered.Taiwan, which regularly faces typhoon between July and October, was particularly hard-Hit by Danas, especially due to its unusual trajectory and powerful winds, making it one of the most disruptive storms in recent memory.
