New Delhi: Two and three-wheelers related to unexpected violations about traffic rules by two and three-wheelers, entering the main carriageway of the expressway and reaching Delhi-NCR-controlled Stretch, Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari have asked Delhi Police to “implement” such vehicles on high-speed corridors.Gadkari has also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to remove hoardings and illegal advertisements on national highways and expressways, as they can distract the drivers and cause accidents.Issues came to discuss a meeting under the chairmanship of Gadkari and on 4 June, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and CM Rekha Gupta participated.According to the minutes of the meeting issued this week, the NHAI and Highways Ministry officials highlighted that according to the February 16 notification, the entry of two and three-wheelers has been banned on the main carriageway of the main carriageway highway of Badarpur. Similarly, the notification of January 1, 2021 restricts these vehicles on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway.Similarly, a notification was issued in January 2024, in which these vehicles were banned on UER-II, Delhi-Gurgaon and Dwarka Expressway. “Traffic police were instructed to ensure strict enforcement of these restrictions in all these parts,” read in minutes of the meeting.Gadkari’s direction is amid increasing concerns over accidents caused by unauthorized entry of these vehicles. Officials said, despite signage and regulations, the enforcement has become relaxed, causing widespread disregard for the rules. “The minister had said that it is important to maintain discipline on high -speed roads to reduce road accidents and ensure smooth traffic flows. The fear of being caught every time for violation may be a preventive and the police have to implement it.”TOI had highlighted how about 63% of traffic rules on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and newly opened Dwarka Expressway on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway were due to illegal entry of two and three-wheelers on the Dwarka Expressway in access-controlled stretch.
