New Delhi: Employees of state-driven transport corporations of Karnataka launched an indefinite strike on Tuesday morning, disrupting public bus services across the state and caused difficulties for passengers.Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), and Kalyan Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) stopped buses after buses. The strike pointed out long queues and confusion at bus stations, as many people were looking for other ways to travel. On Monday, the Karnataka High Court directed the transport workers to ban their strike plan. But all four corporations decided to move forward with protest.
Why are they protesting?
The strike is being conducted along with the release of 38 months unpaid salary, implementation of wages amendment from January 1, 2024, an end for activist harassment, and a demand in which the drivers of the company have also been assigned to electric buses. The talks between the government and the transport unions had failed before the strike. The High Court on Monday issued an interim migration on strike, stating that the entire stop of public transport would create difficulty to the public. However, unions have decided to move forward with their opposition.Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged workers to cancel the strike. However, union leaders said that the government’s offer to clean only two years dues was not acceptable and there was no clear assurance on the salary modification.KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation President HV Anant Sabbarao said, as quoted by PTI, “We are not satisfied. We want a full 38 months dues.”
