US-Iran Sangharsh: Trump can reduce oil restrictions on Tehran to help rebuild the country; ‘They need money’

US President Donald Trump

The United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday indicated that they could reduce Iran’s oil restrictions to help the country’s reconstruction, while its maximum pressure campaign on Iran, including oil sales restrictions, can be maintained. Trump said during the NATO Summit News Conference, “They need money to shape that country back. We want to see doing so.” After Israel and Iran’s agreement for a ceasefire, Trump suggested that China could proceed with Iranian oil purchase. However, the White House later clarified that the statement did not amend the current US sanctions. The Trump administration had earlier implemented several restrictions affecting China’s independent “chewing” refineries and port terminal operators due to its Iranian oil procurement. In a conversation with CNBC, Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witcoff said that Trump’s statement about China’s oil purchase from Iran was aimed at demonstrating a desire to cooperate with China rather than to cause economic losses. As a customer of Iran’s primary crude oil, China has continuously opposed Trump’s sanctions on oil trade. “We are interested in working together with you, and hopefully becomes a sign for the Iranians,” said Witcoff.
