Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is bringing international well control experts to include an uncontrollable gas leak, which has remained for a week in one of its wells in Assam. The leak began on June 13 at 11:45 am during the regular servicing operation in the number RDS -147, when sudden gush of natural gas was seen. Although no injury was reported, the gas has been uncontrolled since the incident. In a statement released on Wednesday, ONGC said, “ONGC continues its focused operation to control the gas flow from RDS#147A well.” The company said its in-house experts are consulting in collaboration with a global well control agency. While the timeline for the agency’s name and its arrival was not disclosed, ONGC confirmed that the gathering process was already going on.To reduce the condition, the well has been successfully linked to a nearby production facility, which allows partial bend of gas in a controlled manner. “As an additional security measure, the well of the well is being maintained continuously,” the company said.Environmental safety measures have also been extended. The air quality monitoring by the Pollution Control Board, Assam indicates that the air quality remains within the permissible limit set by the National Surrounded Air Quality Standards (NAAQs) of the Central Pollution Control Board.“Intensive analysis of the ongoing gas has been done through the sample collection, confirming that the gas is non -toxic in nature. Being lighter than the wind, the gas is spreading upwards in high height, reducing the risk for nearby residences, ”read in ONGC’s statement. The noise level around the site is also subject to observation and is allegedly within the acceptable boundaries beyond a radius of 500 meters. The company said, “The security of the community and the environment remains the most important priority of the ONGC, and all the tasks are being taken according to the regulatory guidelines and the industry according to the best practices,” the company said, only essential personnel are being allowed to enter the leak zone.
