New Delhi: Experienced nuclear scientist and former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman, Shri Srinivasan died on Tuesday at the age of 95.He was the recipient of the prestigious civilian honor, Padma Vibhan, under which the development of 18 nuclear power units was seen in India’s nuclear power scenario.Shri Srinivasan started his journey in September 1955 with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which was with Homi Bhabha on the development of APSara – India’s first nuclear research reactor – which arrived on criticism in August 1956.Over the years, he served in many major positions of national importance. In 1974, he became the director of the Power Projects Engineering Division at DAE, and in 1984, he took over as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Board. In these roles, he led the plan, development and operation of nuclear power projects across India. In 1987, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy.Congress President Mallikrajun Kharge condoled the death of Shri Srinivasan and said that his death is a significant loss for the scientific community of India.In a post on X, Kharge mourned the death of the scientist and said, “Dr. Sri Srinivasan, a leading nuclear scientist and the Padma Vibhan recipient recipient is a symbol of a significant loss to the scientific community of India.”
