Tamil filmmaker Vikram Sugumaran died suddenly due to cardiac arrest while traveling by bus from Madurai to Chennai on 2 June. His colleagues and friends expressed their grief and paid tribute to social media.Humble start and film aspirationsVikram came from Parmakudi in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. Inspired by a passion for acting and filmmaking, he moved to Chennai to carry forward his dreams in the film industry. His initial career was shaped under the advice of mythological filmmaker Balu Mahendra, where Vikram acted as an assistant and contributed to several short films around 1999–2000. He was also included in projects like ‘Julie Ganpati’ during this early period.Acting debut and film showAs an actor, Vikram made his debut in ‘Poldhavan’ acclaimed by the reviewers directed by Wetrimaran, and later appeared in Sasikumar’s ‘Kodivaran’. However, his true calling was behind the camera, where he made a mark in 2013 with the beginning of his direction with ‘Mada Yanaik Cotom’. The film, installed in a rural background, was praised for his raw and realistic depiction of the village life, earning Vikram recognition for the skills of her story.After an interval, Vikram returned to direction in 2023 with ‘Ravana Kottam’, which included a strong artist, including Shanthanu, Anandi, Prabhu and Ilavarsu. His last project, ‘Theram Boram’, was said to be related to climbing and mountaineering.The film community mourned the sudden demise of Vikram. Actor Shanthanu shared hearty memories and pictures with Vikram on social media, expressing his grief and praise.
