Incident in college
The incident came to light during the Nigam’s performance at the East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Bengaluru on 25 April. Despite several requests from a fan to sing Kannada songs, Sonu said, stating that the fan was aggressively demanding it. He further commented, “Yahi Karan is, Pahgam Mein which has happened.
Sonu Nigam’s statement criticized not only from Kannadigas but also from Neetzance across India, who considered it “uncontrolled”. Social media users questioned their argument with a writing, “How is the initiative incident related to asking the Kannada song at the Bengaluru concert ?? Sonu Nigam 2 Why is it adding unrelated things.” Another X user tweeted, “If asking for the Kannada song in the Bengaluru concert is considered anti-national, I have no problem that is being labeled as one.” However, there were also people who supported Sonu and praised him for standing for himself.
Kannada community resentment
According to India Today, the Kannada-dawn community was annoyed compared to the request of a fan for the Kannada song for a terrorist incident. In response, Karnataka Rakshan Vedic (KRV )’s Bengaluru district branch, a Kanada Group, filed a police complaint on Friday. He accused the singer of hurting Kannada emotions, lightening enmity between linguistic groups in Karnataka and inciting a potential violence in the region.
“This statement is not only insensitive, but also dangerous. By linking a simple cultural request to a terrorist incident, Sonu Nigam depicted Kannadigas as intolerant, instigated linguistic hatred and threatened communal harmony,” read in the complaint.
The group has urged the authorities to urge to file an FIR against Sonu Nigam under various sections of the Indian Corporation (BNS), cited allegations such as promoting enmity on linguistic lines, criminal defamation and hurting linguistic sentiments.
While the Bengaluru police have admitted to receiving the complaint, no formal case has been registered yet. So far, Sonu Nigam has not made any public statement about the allegations.
