EOW: IPS officer got Rs 2.6 crore from husband who faces husband

Mumbai: IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar received Rs 2.64 crore from her husband Puroshtam Chavan in her bank account, who is facing investigation in two cases of cheating and money laundering, according to the investigation of economic crimes. Investigators also found that Karandikar invested money in stock market intraday trading, but lost. The EOW has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), the Director General of Maharashtra, if Karandikar declared it in his asset disclosure. The money was received between 2017 and 2018 in the 90-day period.The police have not nominated him as an accused. When contacted by Toi, Karandikar replied through WhatsApp, “I am on the medical leave and not in a position to talk.”

EOW had filed two first information reports (FIRs) against Chavan in February this year and 11 others allegedly left 20 victims of Rs 24.78 crore at a concessional rates on the pretext of providing government quota flats in Mumbai, Thane and Pune. Chavan allegedly misused his influence to promise flats and government plots in plots related to Bhiwandi, Pune, Panvel, Savari and even Bombay Port Trust (BPT). In addition to these cases, the Enforcement Directorate is investigating Chavan separately in income tax refund fraud of Rs 263-crores of rupees.An EOV official said, “Dhan was transferred to Karandikar’s account and was not reversed. We have called him for questioning so that he could provide an explanation. However, he has not yet been seen citing the medical leave,” an officer said. According to a Karandikar colleague, she has initiated divorce proceedings in the Bandra family court to hide mental cruelty, financial harassment, discomfort, bipolar disorder and financial behavior of her husband.Karandikar allegedly vacated his official quarters located above the Kolaba police station without formally informing the police headquarters.
