New Delhi: At a time when Vodafone Idea wants the government’s support for existence, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday that duality is not good for the region and should be competed in the industry.In an incident in the Broadband India Forum, Schindia said, “Our job is to provide more and more avenues as well as within each vertical, providing intense competition. It is a duality of a carrier or two carrier.”In addition to the state -run BSNL, there are three private operators, with Reliance Jio and Airtel running strong, while Vodafone ideas have become financially crippled despite using several bailouts, which raised a 49% stake towards future payment in the government.Skindia’s statement comes amid speculation that the government is providing a new bailout package to the telecom industry, especially Vodafone Idea and Airtel, which was given a tough competition with a penalty running for thousands of crores of rupees from the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) fine. Companies failed to get relief from the Supreme Court and are now looking at the government for some support.Vodafone Idea, which has a loan of more than Rs 2 lakh crore and already availed the prohibition of statutory payment to the Department of Telecom, is still looking for another relief package. The minister’s statement on having three private players should come as a support for the company.Vodafone Idea expressed apprehension about its existence in the petition filed before the Supreme Court. On the other hand, BSNL is yet to roll out 4G and 5G services at PAN-India level.Sindia said that the country has fiber technology for broadband, Wi-Fi, and will soon have satellite services. “(We) should be competing in every field,” he said that the spectrum will soon be assigned to satellite players on administrative basis for initial services.The minister said that there is intensive competition among internet service providers and the government will issue rules for 6 gigahrts spectrum before August 15, which will be used for Wi-Fi services and will be used to bridge digital divide.
