India successfully demonstrated its ability to neutralize fixed-wing aircraft, missiles, and herd drones using a 30-cilowat laser-based weapon system, marking an important milestone in the country’s defense technology.
The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) developed this directed-energy weapon (Dew), which is now ready for production and deployment in various military platforms.
With this achievement, India joins an aristocratic group in countries including the United States, China and Russia, which has advanced laser weapons capabilities.
DRDO President Dr. Sameer V Kamat said: “This is just the beginning of the journey. The synergy that this lab has achieved with other DRDO labs, industry and academics, I am sure we will soon reach our destination … We are working on other high energy systems like high energy microwaves. Technologies.”
30 kW laser weapon The system is designed to combat air threats such as drones and helicopters within a 5 km boundary.
It features advanced electronic war capabilities, including jamming communication and satellite signals.
Its versatility allows it to adapt it to both ground-based and shipbourne applications, which increases India’s defense readiness in many domains. The system is equipped with a 360-degree electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor for accurate targeting and can be rapidly deployed through air, rail, road or sea.

The DRDO is also developing more powerful systems, such as a 300-cilovat “Surya” laser weapon, which claims an operational range of 20 kilometers.
The system is designed to target high -speed air threats such as missiles and unmanned air systems (UAS), which further strengthens India’s position in modern war. These progresses align with global trends, which emphasize high-power lasers for missile defense and counter-drain operations.
