‘We have Tony Soperno’: George Conway compared Trump to a fictional character; Comments made on federal acquisition of DC

George Conway, a conservative and leading critic of President Donald Trump, has compared Republican leader to Tony Soprano, a fictional mob owner Tony Somranos. Comment came in response to Trump’s federal acquisition of Washington DC.Conway and former Homeland Security Officer Miles Taylor on Wednesday introduced Trump at MSNBC to keep the DC police under federal control and discuss the national guard. Trump said the step was in response to a crime “out of control”, although data suggests that the violent crime in DC has been declining since its peak in 2023, as the Independent reported. Conway, who was once married to Trump’s advisor Kelinen Conway, said, “We don’t have Ronald Reagan. We have Tony Soprano. He is catching people, threatening them, threatening them, threatening them, doing them, working beyond our legal rights. And he scares people. ,He said that Trump scares people he sees as opponents. “We see the threats of those who had courage, like miles [Taylor]To speak and criticize the President, “Conway said.” There is no limit to how low he will go, and what he would do to intimidate and threaten and claim power on things. ,Taylor, who served as the head of the staff in the Homeland Security Department under Trump’s first term, wrote an anonymous 2018 up-ed title “I am part of resistance within Trump administration.” In this, he said that many Trump appointments are the purpose of protecting democratic institutions to prevent Trump’s “more misguided impulses”.In April, Trump signed an executive order targeting Taylor, canceling his safety approval and directed the Department of Justice to investigate it. His lawyers also sent a letter to the Justice Department and the Homeland Security Inspector General, requesting an inquiry.Taylor described the experience as deeply disruptive. He said, “It has not been made easy, because once you are on the President’s blacklist, all kinds of things start getting stuck in your life, business, relationship, friendship, financial, you have an army of lawyers,” he told MSNBC.Conway also expressed concern about federal participation in local law enforcement across the country. Trump on Wednesday indicated that DC Kadam could work as a model for cities such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.“It is also important to me that people understand why it is that such federal overache is bad, and it is bad because it strengthens power in a federal government. And as Americans, we never wanted,” CONW said. “We always have a federal system where local authorities handle local things like crime and security on the streets, public safety.”He said that such federal participation can cause misuse as there will be a limited investigation.Trump has also suggested to expand the federal acquisition of the DC police beyond the 30-day limit, which will require the approval of the Congress. They hope that Republican support for expansion will almost unanim.
