New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariff in India and ‘penalty charge’ have increased extensively in the country. Given its impact on the Indian economy, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that this is a serious matter and can “destroy” India’s trade with the US.He said that business talks are going on with us and “it is likely that it may come down.”Talking to news agency Annie, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Trump’s “dead economy” said, “This is a very serious matter for us … 25, as well as an unspecified penalty to buy our oil and gas from Russia, it can take up to 35-45 … It is also a matter of 100% fine, which will come with the US. If this does not, it will harm our exports, because America is a very large market for us.,The Congress leader further said that America’s demands are completely unfair and it also needs to understand India’s needs. “On the other hand, if their demands are completely inappropriate, our dialogues have every right to oppose … America also has to understand our needs. Our tariffs on America are not inappropriate. It is about 17% average. It is not a competitively enough price to sell American goods in the Indian market,” he said. He further suggested that India may diversify its market if the talks do not go well with us, saying that “we are not out of options.” On trade talks between the US and India, he said, “This is a challenging dialogue. We are interacting with many countries. America is not the only conversation. We have a conversation with the European Union, we have already made a deal with the UK, and we are also talking with other countries. If we cannot compete in the US, we may have to diversify our markets outside the US. We are not out of options. If the US is completely inappropriate with its demands, we have to go somewhere else., He said, “This is India’s strength; we are not a completely export-dependent economy like China. We have a good and strong domestic market. We should give strong support to our negotiaters to find the best deal. If a good deal is not possible, we may have to walk away,” he said.
