New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday sought reactions from eight states including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, accusing a petition by the Pravasi Workers Welfare Board of West Bengal, accusing the WB of unauthorized custody of Muslim migrant workers on suspicion of becoming a Bangladeshi national.Prashant Bhushan, who was present for the West Bengal Government-Run Board, accused the police to detain migrant laborers from Bengal at UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, Haryana, Chhatina, Chhattisgarh and Delhi and despite adequate documents for several Indian nationality.Bhushan said that the board had no objection to the inquiry to establish the nationality of Bengali speaking Muslims, but detention should be only of non-Indians. Looking for restraint on such preventions, he was reported by a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Joylya Bagchi that the court would first consider the reactions of the states before passing any interim order. The case will be heard again within a fortnight.The petition filed under Article 32 challenged the validity of these detention in the light of the MHA letter on May 2, 2025, which authorizes the inter -state verification and detention of the suspected illegal migrants – was issued before the operation vermilion.The board said the workers of West Bengal, mostly low -income, face systemic boycott in informal areas in these states, linguistic and economic grounds, but did not explain why they still choose to work outside West Bengal. This has accused such preventers, without valid procedures, articles violate 14 and 15, eradicate dignity, and disrupt the right to livelihood.
