New Delhi: TMC MP Mahua Motra on Friday demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Election Commission’s claim that Bihar had 56 lakh illegal voters, as its controversial special intensive amendment (SIR) exercise.Stating that issues related to the border came under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Motra demanded Amit Shah’s resignation, saying, “If the central government feels that 56 lakh people have infiltrated Bihar, what was the Ministry of Home Affairs? It is the responsibility of the Home Minister, and they should resign.”“Such a thing has never happened in the history of India. The Election Commission, which is a constitutional body, is working as a branch of the BJP. The CEC speaks like a spokesperson of the BJP … In 24 hours, the number of unattainable voters has increased to more than 11000 to 1 lakh, “he said. The EC said on Thursday that about one lakh voters were “unaware”, while another 55 million was permanently migrated, or registered at several places.By June 24, 2025, the amount of 7% of 7.9 crore voters of Bihar, these 56 lakh names, were classified as “incorrectly included”. According to an EC official, his presence on the roll could pose a serious risk of fake voting in the upcoming election. The official suggested that one lakh “non-existent” voters could be illegal immigrants, possibly from neighboring states like Bengal, which were nominated in Bihar through corrupt means or weak verification during roll amendments. All 56 lakh incorrectly listed voters will be excluded from the draft electoral role to be published on 1 August.
