When Jaya Bachchan played the role of Mausumi Chatterjee in ‘Prayas’: “Manipped …” | Hindi film news

Jaya Bachchan has always been a bright name in Hindi cinema. Known for his natural acting and powerful screen appearance, he acted in classic films like “Guddi,” Abhimaan, “Mili,” and “Anamika”. In the 1970s, she was the top option for many filmmakers, winning the hearts with every role.
But when his film journey was full of success, Jaya Bachchan has also been a part of many controversies. His direct nature and quick nature made headlines many times. Whether it is her run-in with Paprazi or her bold comments in public programs, Jaya is never afraid to speak her mind. One of the low-term stories includes her alleged conflict with fellow actress Mousumi Chatterjee-a story that still creates a discussion.
The film that started all this
As India.com told, the heart of this story lies in Gulzar’s 1972 film ‘Prayas’. While the film is remembered for its beautiful story and performance, many people do not know that Jaya Bachchan was not the original option for the lead role.
According to Mousumi Chatterjee, she was the first actress in the film. He shot for three days before he was replaced. In an interview with ‘Lahran Retro’ in 2023, Mousumi opened about what exactly happened behind the curtain. “I shot for three days, and I could see what was manipulated in those three days. I could see Jaya Bachchan’s secretary. She lived in the office from morning to night. And suddenly Gulzar da, which I knew from the time of ‘Gitanjali’ and who taught Urdu from yesterday, said that you want to shoot late at night.”
At that time, Mausumi became just a mother. He told that Gulzar shot only during the day, as his child was still very young. But instead of understanding his situation, Gulzar gave him a harsh reply.
She recalled, “I had recently become a mother, and the child was young. I could only shoot in one shift.” But Gulzar told him, “Many other heroines were in queue to take this role.” Feeling hurt and sidelined, Mousumi left the film. Soon after, Jaya Bachchan was placed in her place.
Coincidental or clever plan?
The sudden change in casting raised many questions. Mousumi noticed that Jaya’s secretary was always present on the set during his short time. This felt her that some plans were being made behind her back. Although Jaya Bachchan has never talked about this, his entry into the film surprised people whether this step was intentional. Till date, neither Gulzar nor Jaya have responded to Mausumi’s claims. Was it just a matter of bad time? Or was it running more behind the curtain? It seems that we can never know the whole truth.
