New Delhi: BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonwale came out in Cricketer-Trime Congress MP Yusuf Pathan on Sunday amidst the ongoing violence in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Referring to a post on Pathan’s Instagram – where he appears comfortably and drinks tea – Poonwalla questioned the priorities of the MP as the state struggles with unrest.
However, Murshidabad- Upriya of violence, Pathan’s party ally, represents by Abu Taher Khan in the Lok Sabha, Poonwale still used the situation to target him and TMC on his social media post. BJP’s Poonwalla also used photographs of violence-hit areas in his X post.
In a post on X, he wrote: “Bengal is burning. HC has said that it cannot keep eyes closed and deploy central forces. Mamata Banerjee is encouraging such state-protected violence as the police remains silent!
Later, while talking to the ANI news agency, Poonwale further intensified her criticism: “Mamata Banerjee has raised a cricketer from somewhere called Yusuf Pathan and has given him a ticket. The vote bank has won it in Bergampur and today when Bengal is burning, Hindu is being enjoyed by Hindu.
His comments occurred in some parts of West Bengal, especially amid increased tension in Murshidabad, which has seen violent protests after a change in the Waqf law.
At least three people have died and more than 150 people have been arrested. Several areas including Malda, South 24 Parganas and Murshidabad saw arson, stoned, and clashes with security forces.
Earlier on Friday, several vehicles were set and stones were hurt in security forces. Various districts including Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas were shaken by violence.
Officials have conducted several raids since then and deployed additional forces to restore the order.
